making impact
I am Uwaleme, Nzubechi Pantaleon, an undergraduate at Federal University of Technology, Owerri Imo State, Nigeria. In my high school, (Comprehensive Secondary school, Umuezeala-Ogwara Ehime-Mbano) I was the President of Peace Club, a student’s led club founded by Prof. Ernest Uwazie in one of his summer visits to our school in 2006. I took great interest in it and performed a good number of extra-curricular activities from which I learned Peer Mediation Process and Dialogue skills after summer workshops conducted by Center for African Peace and Conflict Resolution and Afripeace and Development Foundation in 2010 and 2013 respectively.
My participation in Peace Club programs have shaped my person to a greater extent since my graduation from High School. It has exposed me to different personalities and organizations that are championing peace-building programs across Africa such as Mercy Corps, PIND Foundation, and Fund for Peace and so on. I was able to participate in the Partners for Peace Camp in Portharcourt, Nigeria in 2013 where I built networks with fellow youths and shared experiences together on how to build peace in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria. I am the Director of Peace Leadership and Conflict Resolution International at Federal University of Technology Owerri, a students’ organization I founded out of my love for peace that focuses on campus violence and crises prevention, leadership development, social justice and human rights through a range of programs and awareness that directly engage students. I participated in many extra-curricular activities at school including the Goi Peace Foundation and UNESCO International Essay Contest for Young People in which I gained recognition. I also won the ‘Write & Win’ and ‘Read & Win’ Essay contests of the Center for Social Awareness, Advocacy and Ethics Inc.in 2013 and 2014 respectively.
I look forward to participating in the Fund for Peace Internship in Washington DC in 2015 and attending the Emerging Nigerian Leaders Conference in December, 2014. I considered it a blessing to have spent my last few years of my life working for peace, a value that every man in the world seeks.
