Summer Youth Peace and Cultural Education Program

  About the Program

The main goal of the Summer Youth Peace and Cultural Education Program (SYPCEP) is to promote youth peace and cultural education between Sacramento students and their West African counterparts.

The SYPCEP's main objectives are to:
  1. introduce the participants to African cultures
  2. expose them to foreign service career opportunities and education
  3. broaden their global views
  4. enhance their self-esteem
  5. promote peacemaking and intercultural relations skills
  6. develop problem solving and leadership skills
  7. initiate cross-cultural exchanges between the Sacramento and West African youth

These objectives will be implemented through 100 hour pre-trip preparation sessions, including a 5 day conflict resolution workshop, fundraisers, reading list and visits to major cultural and significant historical sites in eight major towns/cities of Nigeria and Ghana. The students will experience both urban and rural lifestyles, with some family home stays.

While in Ghana and Nigeria, the students will participate in:
  • two debates on current issues in US and West Africa
  • dialogues between the Sacramento students and their West African counterparts on US-Africa relations pre/post 9/11,secondary school exit exams, HIV-AIDS, conflict resolution, and the environment
  • presentations and collect materials for their individual peace projects
  • meet and interact with public officials, religious and opinion leaders, human rights activists, traditional rulers, and educators
  • support educational/library projects
Upon their return to Sacramento, the students will share their experiences at their schools, churches and in the general community.
